The Organisation in the spotlight this month is FareShare North East. Nominated for Organisation of the Year at the last volun-cheers event with two of their student volunteers scooping Community Impact Awards, this amazing charity really makes a difference to the people they support. FareShare have been active on the volun-tees platform for many years and we have received such positive feedback from the students who have volunteered their time there. Scoring maximum stars in opportunity ratings and supporting students in their careers, please read on to find out more about the fantastic work they carry out.
FareShare North East aims to address the issues of hunger and food waste by redistributing surplus food to local organisations across the North East. These organisations support vulnerable people in some way. The food is then transformed into delicious hot and cold meals or snacks for people who need it most. For the organisations we work with, getting food from FareShare North East is a much needed resource. Not only does the food help support their beneficiaries, but they are able to reinvest the money they save on food into providing more essential services. This includes delivering advice, guidance, mentoring or holding more social activities.
Did you know that 3.6 million tonnes of food is wasted by the food industry each year? And that 250,000 tonnes of that food is perfectly good-to-eat! By working with the FareShare network we are able to save quality surplus food from going to waste and feed the population who are most vulnerable in the North East. In the North East this is nearly 2000 tonnes per year, and is expected to rise year by year! We receive multiple deliveries of food from our suppliers at our warehouse every day which our team of volunteers and staff help to book in and store. Our warehouse volunteers then pick and pack deliveries ready to be sent out the next day to charities and community groups across the region. Our van drivers and assistants then deliver the food to over 200 charities and community groups across the north east. We normally deliver to over 20 each day! Community groups can sign up to receive weekly orders of food from us to cover their main food needs.
