Zhixin Cui, a student studying MA Concept Art at Teesside University, chose to volunteer with the English Language Café because it was the ‘first and most special organisation she encountered at the university’. The experience not only helped to integrate more effectively into the local learning environment but also provided a meaningful platform to support others in improving their English skills. A typical day in my volunteering role begins around 2:30 p.m. When I arrive, I help prepare for the session by assisting Irfan in setting up games, serving coffee, tea, biscuits, and other snacks, and welcoming participants. Once enough students arrive, we start practicing English through fun and engaging games, creating an enjoyable and supportive atmosphere. After each session, I help tidy up, ending what I always find to be a very fulfilling day of communication and connection.

Through my volunteering experience, I’ve developed a range of valuable skills, including management, organisational, and communication abilities. What I enjoy the most is the rewarding feeling of helping others and seeing their confidence in speaking English grow.

My advice for future volunteers is to be confident when communicating and not to worry too much about grammar or accent mistakes, the most important thing is to connect and understand each other.

Volunteering has really strengthened my organisational skills and taught me how to balance teamwork with personal initiative, which has also benefitted my studies in concept art. Looking ahead, I hope to find a career that allows me to continue helping others while combining my creativity, communication skills, and empathy to make a positive impact.
