Support people living with dementia to engage in meaningful group activities. Help create a welcoming, inclusive environment through social connection, conversation, and creativity.
What You'll Do:
As a Dementia Activity Group Volunteer, you will help deliver structured group sessions for people living with dementia in community settings. Your role will involve:
- Greeting attendees warmly and helping them settle in
- Offering drinks and friendly conversation
- Supporting group members to participate in activities
- Encouraging inclusion, especially for those who may be quieter or need extra reassurance
- Leading a small activity or helping with themed sessions, if interested
- Assisting with general session tasks, such as taking the register
- Occasionally supporting carers with a listening ear or feeding back any concerns to the team
Each session is designed around Cognitive Stimulation Therapy principles and aims to provide mental stimulation, social engagement, and joy.
Why You'll Love It:
You’ll form meaningful connections with people living with dementia and their carers, while gaining real insight into their lived experiences. No two sessions are ever the same – and your presence will make a tangible difference to someone’s day.
What You'll Learn:
You’ll gain a greater understanding of:
The many forms and stages of dementia
The power of meaningful activity to improve wellbeing
How to build trusting relationships through compassionate communication
You’ll also develop practical skills in facilitation, teamwork, and adaptability.
What We're Looking For:
We’re looking for someone who is:
Kind, patient, and enjoys spending time with older people
Comfortable engaging in conversation and encouraging others to participate
Reliable and able to give 90–120 minutes per week
Open to learning about dementia and how it affects each person differently
Respectful of others’ dignity and confidentiality
If you have a particular interest or skill (e.g. art, music, storytelling, crafts), we’d love for you to share it – but this is by no means required.
