Step Ahead project Teesside is a non-profit organisation that was created to uplift and support individuals, between the ages of 5 and 21, as well as those over the age of 21, with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and their families.
Our work aims to focus on direct, inclusive, accessible, and meaningful support through a range of different sessions. Our sessions include arts and crafts, physical activities, open play and open support, Star Steps (which are fun activities that help support academic development), as well as offering one-to-one support. The one-to-one support we offer provides guidance, emotional support, educational support, and independent skills guidance, such as writing a CV, mock interviews, as well as preparing them for adulthood and integration into society.
Step Ahead Project was built on the idea of those who have lived experience. Our team includes those who have personal experience and/or educational experience with SEND, including those who are neurodivergent. This therefore means that all our team members have faced challenges firsthand hand allowing the support we provide to be provided by those who have faced similar challenges and struggles. Additionally, our founder lives with cerebral palsy, but wasn’t diagnosed with dyslexia until university. These experiences drive our commitment to understanding and supporting others who face similar barriers. We know what it feels like to be overlooked or misunderstood, and we’ve made it our mission to create a space where people feel seen, valued, and empowered. This deep understanding of the struggles within education, healthcare, and everyday life informs everything we do.
Our work matters because, through research and lived experiences, we found that too often, families with children or young people or adults with additional needs are left feeling isolated, unheard, and unsupported. Accessing services can be overwhelming, inconsistent, or simply unavailable—especially for those with complex emotional, behavioural, or sensory challenges. This is why our work matters because we support the family as a whole, a holistic point of view in supporting different areas such as social, educational, paperwork support and many more
At Step Ahead, we believe that:
- Support should be personal, individualised and human
- Every act of kindness counts, whether it’s setting up a room, offering a smile, or sitting quietly beside someone who’s struggling and offering them a drink
- providing a safe and inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy and access, regardless of their disability.
We’re not looking for a perfect CV —we’re looking for real people who care and are compassionate.
- Compassionate – You don’t need to have all the answers; just a kind heart and an open mind.
- Want to make a difference within their local community
- Reliable – Showing up consistently makes all the difference for the families we support, and shows a good work ethic
- Patient – Especially when working with children or individuals with sensory or emotional needs
- Good listeners – Sometimes just being there and listening is the best support you can give
- Flexible and proactive – Willing to help where it’s needed most, from setting up a room to joining in sensory play or chatting with a parent
- Have a DBS or be required to have one due to the nature of the work.
- Specific training, such as Makaton, first aid, and safeguarding, is provided, and we support in empowering all volunteers every step of the way.
Unlike some other organisations, Step Ahead Project is local, personal, and relationship-based. We’re not just another organisation — you become part of a community that truly cares.
Here’s what sets us apart:
- Led by lived experience – We know what families go through because we’ve lived it too
- No red tape – We’re practical, responsive, and person-centred in everything we do
- Flexible volunteering – We value your time, your energy, and your boundaries
- Small steps with big impact – We believe you don’t have to do everything. Let us know your timetable and work commitments.
- Safe, supportive and inclusive spaces – For children, young people, adults, parents or carers as well as team members who come on board.
